    Biography
    • Hebrew lawgiver; b. probably Egypt. The prototype of the prophets, in the 13th cent. B.C. he led his people out of bondage in Egypt to the edge of Canaan. According to the Bible (EXODUS; LEVITICUS; NUMBERS; DEUTERONOMY), he lived in constant touch with God, who promulgated the Law (often called Mosaic law) through Moses' mouth. Moses never entered the Promised Land but only saw it from Mt. Pisgah before he died. Authorship of the first five books of the Bible--the Pentateuch or TORAH--has traditionally been ascribed to him; hence they are called the Books of Moses.
