    Biography
    •    Robert came to Portsmouth Colony from Salem, MA (1628), Lynn, MA (1630), and Roxbury, MA (1634).  He had a history of being asked to leave other colonies and later had trouble in RI, including a charge of heresy.  He later lived in Warwick and died there in 1656.
In 1639 three Potters were among twenty-nine founders who signed an oath of allegiance to King Charles in the compact establishing the colony of Portsmouth, RI.  Robert signed his name, but George and Nicholas made their mark on the document.  The settlement of Portsmouth came about because it's founders William Coddington and Anne Hutchinson had been expelled from Massachusetts along with their followers presumably including Robert Potter. [Potter, Kenneth G., 1995.  Descendants of George Potter of Portsmouth, RI.]
1641: was admitted with Groton in settlement of Shaomet, which they called Warwick.  1643: Seized with a whole company and brought as prisoners to Boston, where the government sentenced them to be confined in various places, enjoined them not to preach their "monstrous absurd doctrine" on pain of death.  Soon however, as sympathy for such suffer. was unavoidable excit. they all were banished and he went to England and obtained justice by restoration to their estates.  He kept an Inn at Warwick in 1649 and died in the autumn of 1655, or between that and the spring following.
