    Biography
    • d. 922 B.C., king of the ancient Hebrews, son and successor of DAVID. His mother was BATHSHEBA. The reign of Solomon was eminently peaceful, marked by foreign alliances, notably with Egypt and with Phoenicia (he was on especially good terms with Hiram of Tyre). He developed trade and commerce. As he grew older, his despotism became worse and finally led to the revolt of JEROBOAM I. Solomon's wisdom is proverbial. He built the first Hebrew temple at Jerusalem. PROVERBS and ECCLESIASTES were ascribed to him, and the SONG OF SOLOMON bears his name.
