    Biography
    • Piers or Peter de Mauley was a Poitevin, a favorite of King John , one of his counselors in 1211. He is doubted alleged to have been employed to murder Prince Arthur, son of King John's older brother, Geoffrey, who died in 1186. He gave 7,000 marks to possess the whole inheritance of his wife; built Mulgrave Castle ; went on a crusade with the Earl of Albermarle to the Holy Land in 1241, where he is said to have died. He married Isabella, only daughter and heiress of Robert de Turnham (died 1211), who took part in the third Crusade, and in May 1191, was in command o f one-half of Richard Cuoer de Lion's fleet, which sailed around Cyprus to capture hostile galleys. When Richard left Acre Turn ham remained in Cyprus as a co-justiciar with Richard de Camville, who died soon after, leaving Turnham sole justiciar, and quelled a revolt of the natives. In 1193 he returned to England and about 1195 Richard rewarded Turnham for his services with the hand of Joanna, daughter and heiress of William Fossard, the last of the Lords of Mulgres. Hemingburgh says Peter de Mauley was rewarded for his part in Arthur's murder with the hand of Isabel, but no contemporary writers mention his name in this connection. He was arrested for treason for having promised to hand over Eleanor (sister of the murdered Prince Arthur) to the King of France. Piers de Mauley for his marriage with Isabel, made a fine of 7,000 marks, and although the assessment had not been paid in 1220, so large a fine throws a doubt on the statement that he acquired the marriage for his part in the murder. Isabel was born after 1200 and died 1235. Peter Mauley built Mulgrave Castle near Whitby and was benefactor of Meaux Abbey, where he endowed a chapel in memory of his wife, whose grandfather, William Fossard, had left her Mulgrave and Doncaster in County York.
