    • AKA "Dee"

From a tribute book made about David P. Black and his family by his children in 1978:
"I, Dee Black, was born October 1, 1907 in Old Mexico.  My family moved to Blanding, Utah when I was four years old.  When I was about eight years of age, I started to work on the farm for Uncle Arz.  When I was about fifteen, I went to work for Dad building railroad grade at McPhee, Colorado.  We worked there for five or six years, then Dad went to New Mexico building road.  While there he rented a ranch at Chama, New Mexico and Arch and I worked on this ranch for one year.  Then we moved to Taos, New Mexico, where I worked on the road for a couple of years.
In about 1930 or 31 Dad moved his road equipment and horses back to Blanding.  Then I worked for Charles Helquist at McPhee, Colorado building railroad for two years.  The depression hit and it was hard to find a job and I worked on ranches and farms until 1942 when I went to work for the Forest Service and Alvin and I rented a ranch at Carlisle and lived there until 1952.  I moved back to Blanding and went to work for the Bureau of Land Management.  In 1957, I was transferred to Brigham City, Utah.  I worked there until 1969.  I retired form the BLM and moved to Palo, California and worked on a horse ranch.
In 1971, I moved back to Brigham and worked on a cattle ranch at Snowville, Utah; then moved back to Blanding and worked as a cowboy for a while.  In 1973, I went back to work for the Bureau of Land Management and moved to Randolph, Utah.  Then in 1975, I moved to Corrine, Utah.  In 1977, I moved back to Blanding and now live in Blanding and have a job as a cowboy.
I love horses and have always owned the m to work, ride and race.  While living away from Blanding, I was a member of the Chariot Racing Association and won many races.
I have been a Sunday School teacher, a Primary teacher, President of the Sunday School for seven years and served a full time mission in the San Juan Stake.  My wife and I served one year in the Southwest Indian Mission.
I married Melba Helquist on Feb. 17, 1933 and we have six children.  Two girls and four boys.  We have 18 living grandchildren and four dead.  We have five great grandchildren.
My Dad was a very hard worker and set a good example for his children.  I wish I was as good a man as he was."
