  • Notes
    • From a tribute book made about David P. Black and his family by his children in 1978:
"I was born May 13, 1899 in Pacheco, Chihuahua, Mexico.  At the age of six we lived on a ranch called Cave Valley and that year I learned to milk cows and I've been milking ever since.  At the age of eight we had moved back in Pacheco, as I remember, we lived there at the time I was baptized in the river close to our house. My father David P. Black baptized me on my birthday.  My main activity was taking care of cows and horses, we always had some around.
In July 1912, all U.S. citizens were forced out of Mexico on account of a Civil War that existed in the country.  We moved to Blanding, Utah.  The summer I was sixteen we built a brick house in Blanding.  I hauled the brick from the hill two miles south of town and the sand and gravel four miles north of town.  Tended Dave Brienholt, a brother-in-law, sister Mae's husband, while he lay brick.  Then I hauled the lumber from a sawmill twelve miles north of Blanding, this was over a very rough canyon road.  I made a trip each day and some days it was very late by the time I got home.  After the lumber was all in I helped Tom Lunt with all the frame work.  We could not get the doors and windows through local store without paying the money, so I was able to borrow the money from the bank.  Later on when I paid Burt Redd the money back he told the joke around that I had built a home on thirty-six dollars which I had borrowed from the bank.  But Dad paid for the lumber and I worked the next summer and fall for Dave Brienholt to pay for the brick work.
I played center on the basketball team for four years.  I also served one year as Student Body President in High School.  On the 12th of August 1918, I joined the army at Fort Logan, Colorado, so I spent the next year in France, arriving home the next July.
On the 13th of May I arrived in Atlanta on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and spent two and a half years there.  I baptized nine souls, including a beautiful girl I married later.  Ellie Billingsley, she was pretty, very talented in music and a real asset to the Church every where we went.  On our mission in the Western States she was loved by everyone, led the singing and played the organ at the same time.
December 2, 1941, I was appointed Post Master at Blanding, which job I held for most of twenty years.  I then moved to Salt Lake and worked in the real estate for a few years which proved very profitable for me.  I have a lovely home, a good income and work in the temple every day.  A lovely family was given to me, two boys and two girls.  Lost one daughter and my wife but now have another lovely wife, Lottie, to take her place.
I have been Branch President three times, Chattnooga, Ledvill, and Steambote Springs, Colorado.  While there the Church constructed a Chapel which I was responsible for.  On two periods I was president of the Sunday School, twice leader in the High Priest Group, thirteen years on the High Council, I know the Lord's work is the proper way of life."
